The Marvel Cinematic Universe is not ruining Hollywood. Movies like Avengers: Age of Ultron are not even killing the popcorn movie. Nor for that matter did Avengers: Age of Ultron expose some kind of cracks in the Marvel Cinematic Universe that will eventually be their undoing, but that’s for another day. Avengers: Age of Ultron is about to cross $1 billion worldwide over the next few days. It has been a victim of less-than-stellar reviews compared to its predecessor and lots of handwringing over its content and its would-be controversies. Regardless of whether or not you liked Avengers: Age of Ultron or didn’t like Avengers: Age of Ultron, the fact remains that its impact and the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s impact on the industry as a whole has been mostly theoretical at this point. Just like the alleged “Nolan-ization” of blockbusters after The Dark Knight, the Marvel Universe has been blamed for a shift in course over the entire industry that really hasn’t transpired yet and may never actually come to pass.
