Of all the things I expected to see surrounding Mad Max: Fury Road, a boycott coming from men’s rights activists likely ranks among the last. But that, somehow, is exactly what we’re seeing. Prominent mens rights blog Return of Kings has accused the new movie of being “feminist propaganda posing as a guy flick,” a sort of trojan horse of equality. The author hadn’t seen the movie, of course, but he’d seen enough: Charlize Theron’s character appeared to talk way too much in the trailer, and some early interviews had suggested that she was going to play a woman in a position of power. Ergo, boycott. As usually happens, Mad Max: Fury Road ends up the clear winner in this situation. Not only are more people talking about this move in a different way than normal, but the movie also enjoys a huge boost in interest from women — normally a weak demographic for a movie like this. My girlfriend’s interest was piqued.
