Early on Sunday morning, July 23rd, authorities found 8 bodies dead inside of a tractor trailer that was parked in the parking lot of a San Antonio Walmart. This is believed to be a human trafficking crime of migrants attempting to enter the United States at all costs – a deadly cost, that is.

San Antonio sits just a mere 150 miles from the border of Mexico. Since President Donald Trump’s inauguration, the United States government has cracked down on illegal immigrants and border control. Just last week, an 8 day long operation allowed federal immigration agents arrest 123 illegal immigrants all with criminal records.

In total, there were 9 fatalities as one migrant passed away later that afternoon in the hospital. What we do know is that all 9 of the lost lives were men, coming into the United States to live a better life even though they were transported illegally.

Initially reports from the authorities stated that these men had died of heat exhaustion and asphyxiation. The temperatures outside of the tractor trailor raised above 100 degrees fahrenheit. In total, 39 people were found in the back of this tractor trailer and 30 were taken to the hospital with more than 50% of them in critical condition. Whether they were victims of human trafficking or illegal immigrants on a journey for a better life, the situation that occured on Sunday was a tragedy in San Antonio.

A statement given by U.S. Attorney Richard Durbin Jr. declared the people found inside of the truck victims of human smuggling, making them “helpless in the hands of their transporters”. The drive of the truck whose name was released – James Matthew Bradley, Jr., a truck driver from Clearwater, Florida was arrested in connection to this major crime. This tragedy comes nearly a decade after one of the largest immigrant fatalities to happen in America. Back in 2003 in Victoria, Texas, more than 70 illegal immigrants were found in the back of an 18-wheeler. Then, 19 immigrants suffocated with 55 remaining survivors.

The Mayor of San Antonio, Ron Nirenberg stated that San Antonio won’t turn it’s back on a man, woman or child in need.
