Three months ago, Aereo, the broadcast-TV-on-the-Internet service that a federal appeals court found to be in violation of copyright law, went out of business. At the bankruptcy proceedings, TiVo bought Aereo’s trademarks, customer list, and other intellectual property for $1 million. I had suspected that TiVo made that purchase because it was planning to launch a “legal Aereo.” With an announcement that it blasted out to the Aereo email list yesterday, TiVo inched a step close to that goal.
